What Usually Fails First
On the systems we open around Springfield, the failure order is fairly consistent. Inlet and outlet baffles go first, especially the concrete ones cast into tanks from the 1970s and 1980s, which spall and drop away. Effluent filters clog next. Distribution boxes settle and stop splitting flow evenly, which starves one lateral and drowns another. Lines crack where a vehicle has crossed them.
None of those is a drain field replacement.
All of them produce symptoms that get diagnosed as one by somebody who never opened the tank.
Diagnosis Before Quote
We do not quote a repair from the driveway. The tank gets pumped, and then we look at the inlet and outlet, the baffle condition, the filter, the liquid level relative to the outlet invert, and whether water is standing in the distribution box. Liquid sitting above the outlet invert points downstream to the field or the line; liquid at the correct level with a clogged filter points at the filter.
That distinction is the difference between a few hundred dollars and a system replacement, and it takes about twenty minutes to establish.
Repair Pricing and What Drives It
Baffle replacement and effluent filter work start around the low end of our repair pricing including the pump-out the diagnosis requires. Distribution box replacement, riser installation, and line repair run higher, into the low thousands when excavation is involved. Full drain field work is quoted separately and requires county involvement.
Anything that counts as modifying or replacing a system needs a county permit. In Greene County that also means the tank has to be pumped and inspected within 72 hours before construction begins, which we schedule around.
When Repair Is Not the Answer
Tanks that have lost structural integrity, single-compartment steel tanks that have rusted through, and drain fields that have been saturated for years are replacements, not repairs. We will tell you that directly rather than sell a repair that buys one season.
Replacement work in both counties has to be designed by a soil scientist, professional engineer, registered sanitarian, or geologist before a permit issues, so the honest first step is a design referral rather than a quote.

- Liquid level relative to the outlet invert on a freshly pumped tank is the tell. At or below the invert with the tank refilling normally points at the tank or filter. Standing above it points downstream. It is a twenty-minute check.
