Republic Septic Tank Service

Republic is a city in both Christian and Greene Counties. That is not a technicality. Septic permitting in Missouri is administered at the county level, so the office you deal with, the standards you build to and the paperwork you file all change depending on which side of the county line your parcel sits on, inside the same municipal boundary and the same ZIP code.

Greene County addresses go to Greene County Building Regulations at the Historic Courthouse in Springfield. Christian County addresses go to the Health Department at 301 E. Brick Street in Ozark. Homeowners routinely call the wrong one, get told they are not in the system, and conclude their property has no septic record.

On the Greene County side, a new residential system must be designed by a soil scientist, professional engineer, registered sanitarian or geologist, soil factor analysis must be done by a soil scientist, and any modification or replacement requires the tank to be pumped and inspected within 72 hours before construction starts.

On the Christian County side, the 1992 county ordinance applies instead: every component has to be marked and identified in the field before the application goes in, and fiberglass and plastic tanks have to be anchored against flotation. There is no 72-hour pumping clock. An installer who works mostly in Springfield will miss the anchoring requirement, and one who works mostly in Ozark will miss the 72-hour window. Both mistakes stop a job.

Republic was incorporated in 1871 and consolidated in 2005, and it reached 18,750 residents at the 2020 census, up from 16,938 the year before, which makes it the second largest city in Greene County. That growth arrived on both sides of the line at once.

The result is a housing stock where neighbors a quarter mile apart went in under different standards in different decades. When we inspect in Republic, the first thing we establish is which county the parcel is actually in, because it determines what the system was legally required to be when it was installed and therefore what we should expect to find in the ground.
